Going Mobile

What can you do on your iPad through the FHU Library?

What is Naxos?

Naxos is a provider of online music and audiobooks. FHU Library has a subscription to three Naxos collections: Naxos Classical Music Library, Naxos Jazz Library, and Naxos Spoken Word Library (audiobooks).

What does the app work on?

iPhone, iPad, iPod running iOS 3.2.2 or later. There's also an app for Android - find it on the Android Market by searching "Naxos Music Library". Naxos Music Library Kindle Fire App (Version 1.8) is also available through the Amazon App Store.

If you find yourself in front of a desktop or laptop, you can also go to Naxos Classical Music Library, Naxos Jazz Library and Naxos Spoken Word Library on the web.

About the Naxos App

Naxos has thousands of albums of classical music, jazz, blues, world music, and opera. Plus with Naxos Spoken Word Library, you'll add another thousand audiobooks to the list of great Naxos resources you can access with your mobile device.
Pros:
• On Naxos Classical Music and Naxos Jazz, you can stream entire albums and you can create an unlimited number of personal playlists.
• On Naxos Spoken Word, you can bookmark where you were within an audiobook to make it easier to pick it up later.
Cons:
• You can't download music or audiobooks - you have to have an internet connection to stream them.
• Only a certain number of FHU students can be logged into the Naxos apps (or the Naxos websites, for that matter) at one time. If the max number are logged on, you'd have to try back later.
• If you want to create a playlist you have to make it on the Naxos website, not on the app. (But you can still search for and play albums without going to the website).
• At this time, we only have a general account on Naxos Spoken Word Library that FHU users have to share, which means that if you create a bookmark in an audiobook it is possible that someone else could come along later and change it.

How to set up the Naxos App

There are actually three Naxos apps, one for each of the collections. You can set up just one, two, or all three if you want. Each one involves three main stages to setting it up:
1) Get a Naxos account for the app you want
For Naxos Classical Music Library, go to NML on the web.
• If you're off campus you'll be asked for your FHU Username and password. You have to enter that to continue, but this is not the same as making a Naxos account.
• Go to the Playlists tab, then click Sign up and fill out the form for a Student/Member Playlist Account.
• You'll receive a confirmation email at the email address you entered. Click the link in the email to confirm your account.
For Naxos Jazz Library, go to Naxos Jazz on the web.
For Naxos Spoken Word Library, all of FHU shares the same account and it's already been created. Please contact the library to find out what the username / password is.
2) Make playlists on the web
• For either Naxos Classical Music Library or Naxos Jazz, go back to the Playlists tab and be sure you're logged in with your new Student/Member Playlist account.
• Click New Playlist and then give it a name. You may want to create several!
• Now find music to fill your playlist; we suggest starting with the Genres tab.
• When you find a song to add, checkmark it and click Add to Playlist on the left.
• Then keep looking for more music.
• Log out when you're done.
For Naxos Spoken Word Library, you don't create a playlist. Using the shared FHU account, you just find the audiobooks directly through the app.
3) Get the Naxos app
• Search for Naxos in the app store and you should easily find all three. You could also directly search NML for the Naxos Classical Music Library; NML Jazz for Naxos Jazz Library; NSWL for Naxos Spoken Word Library.
• Log in using the account you created.
